Menhaden Project

The purpose of this project is to protect the striped bass, weakfish, bluefish and the vital ecosystems of the Hudson River and Chesapeake Bay.
The effort is the result of recent reports regarding the decrease in numbers of the Atlantic Menhaden fishery.  These fish serve as forage for the striped bass, weakfish, bluefish, and is also a food source for many sea birds (including the loon and osprey).
It was advocated that a cap limit be placed on the harvest of the Atlantic Menhaden for at least 5 years, and that it be renewable for another five years if necessary in the Chesapeake Bay and surrounding areas.  We also sought a management plan that would include multi-species interaction and that a research program for the Chesapeake Bay and surrounding areas such as the Hudson River that develops sound scientific information about forage fish such as Atlantic Menhaden.
